not only is content important, but also free advertise anywhere possible, forums are great for this allowing you to have your site in your sig, but make yourself known so more people want to view your site. there are also many sites that will showcase your site if you submit it, try google search terms like showcase my site, forum listing, things like that.

there's also payed advertisement, but with all the free options (there are many more) and the vast reach of the interwebs, you really shouldn't have to rely on pay'd advertising too much.

some methods to spread your site:
-social media (create pages where you can and use good descriptions (these will be picked up alot faster in google than your site itself))
-word of mouth, tell your friends, who in turn tell theirs, ect... ect...
-site listings
-alexa

but as ozzy said most will come out of having not only a lot but good content
