As far as its protection against denial of service attacks go, it's nominal. Most people who believe they have been attacked in the past actually weren't. The likelihood of you being the target of a DoS attack is extremely low.
As far as your actual problem goes, this is well covered at the CF support area, there's a edit needed in one of the vB files so actual IPs are shown instead of the proxy. It's also explained to you during the CF install process.

I've been using Cloudflare for years now and downtime used to be an issue, but not anymore.
Gaming forums and hacking/cracking forums are usually target for (D)DoS attacks, or in case you have competitors. Cloudflare in fact does help stopping DDoS attacks but if you are target of a huge DDoS attack and the attack is directly against your domain name, there's a big chance they will just end the protection and all traffic will go directly to your server again.
