Most probably the reason is that you're a UK citizen, while in my records they seen a different country.

The first sentence in their email was:

Unfortunately we have been unable to validate the registrant details that you have provided for the domain name as you have provided name details that we have been unable to automatically identify against public data sources.

I don't know what public data sources they meant, but they're clear about the need of a copy of my passport. Finally I found a semi-way and they accepted it, while I was still ok with our laws. Instead to send them a photocopy of my active passport I found and sent them a photocopy of my passport which has expired at 2012. Finally they wanted just to check my Name and Country.
