Also this is a great solution.
Give them the same privilages of a normal user group or something less and create a group if you don't just have "members awaiting moderation"
give to this group a promotion of 1 post to enter in the normal users

then in the "members awaiting moderation"
you will found there many spammers where you can immediately check.

Don't forget to make this group moderated...
Like this first spammers you see you report it to the black lists by banning it with this great mod.
