I would think linking to an external image for an avatar could cause a potential mess. What would happen if the site containing the avatar went down? Or changed its filesystem structure rendering the link broken?

If the user had thousands of posts, you'd have a mess of broken images on your hands. :-)

If you limit the size of your avatars (I limit mine to 3KB), bandwidth and disk space aren't really that much of a concern anymore.
