Is it possible to have custom requirements for user promotions?

For instance, many of my users have paid to have access on an external site. We call those people who paid "subscribers."

What I want to do is for users of my forum to log into this external website using their API. Once that is done I have a php script that checks to see if they are subscribers and returns TRUE if they are and FALSE if they aren't.

Is there a way to make it so that if my script returns TRUE, then they are automatically promoted to the "subscriber" usergroup?
