I can answer this only for myself.
In all the previous upgrades I did starting at 4.0.1 to 4.2.2 were done because I was under the impression having the latest version was a "MUST" have.
I can honestly admit that I was lucky in that almost all my mods followed along with every update, so I rarely encountered errors or issues, but it did occur now and again.
As a total noob to Vbulletin when everyone else was upgrading and commenting I believed it was best to stay current as well, least I fall behind, or worse I get hacked because I did not upgrade when I should have.
It was later on that I became more aware of who's who here at this site, and who's comments I can take to the bank!
You are already aware it was you who changed my mind about upgrading yet again. Had I not been informed or took the time to read, I would still be under the impression that having the latest and greatest version was a necessity - not an option.
I have to admit I really like what I see in VB5, and at some point I know I will buy it, but for now, I am happy to stay at what I have.
