I've stuck with 4.2.2 and I tell my clients to do the same. My main concern is the loss of mods and the amount of work involved customizing things. I am not familiar with it enough to know of many bugs or problems but I have also read many negative reviews.

You upgraded and lost your data in the process? This does not sound like a common issue or at least it is not one I have heard before from just running an upgrade.

As for starting a new forum it is not surprising that you would lose traffic, etc. The hardest part is getting started but I doubt this had anything to do with what version of Vbulletin you were using.
