OK pardon me for my ignorance, but why would a bot want to register on a forum?

How can you tell if its a bot that registered, verses a person?

I have noticed that almost everyone that has signed up since this has been installed does not have a birth date registered, could those be bots?

How are they getting pass the built-in captcha?
