Validation is an important step in trouble shooting, but completely valid xhtml/html is not a requirement for the site to work.

As long as a site works consistently between browsers, is all that really matters.

How bad your errors are, are of course their own issues. Really bad code should be fixed, really obvious issues too. But Sometimes its little niggly things that don't really matter.
