Personally I prefer the vertical style but on my forum I use both of them.

The horizontal style is useful in fixed width styles as it gives you full space for important announcements, news, classifieds etc. This allows better formatting and allows you to post bigger images without resizing.

For normal forum threads, the vertical style is better.
