The easiest way to do this is to replace the images in the images/statusicon folder. These are:
forum_new-48.png
forum_old-48.png
forum_new_lock-48.png
forum_old_lock-48.png
forum_link-48.png

If you want different images for each forum, you would need to specify an Image Prefix in the Forum Manager by editing the forum and changing the value of the Prefix for Forum Status Images field. Upload the corresponding images in the form of prefix_imagename.png where imagename matches the ones listed above and prefix_ matches the prefix you entered..
