An "official" copyright is what gives you the write to sue people if they steal it from you. Without an official copyright, the one you have to pay for, you will have a hard time explaining the court why it is wrong to steal your image.
I really don't understand why you would want to officially copyright a small image though. I doubt anybody would go further than repeatedly telling the ripper to take the image off or boycott them.
That board is funny because they didn't even bother changing certain key elements to cover up their tracks. If they were to change vbulletin.org to whatever their board is called, they could claim that it was inspired. I've already had things like that happen to me before. It angered me, but I could do nothing about it. Eventually the guy just took it off and I forgave him.
