If they posted in a forum that is not included in the search index, then that could happen (it's the "Index New Posts in Search Engine" in the forum manager). Otherwise, if you have "Queue Search Updates" set to Yes (under Settings > Options > Message Searching Options in the admincp) then the Search Queue Updates scheduled task has to run in order for new posts to be indexed.
