I think I know what happened. We use a special chess modification called pgn4web. It somehow became infected with a virus. I think the virus was causing the issue.

Today I deleted pgn4web from the root directory and replaced it with a brand new pgn4web file (not infected with a virus). As a consequence, the forum display is now working perfectly and the error I mentioned above is gone
