Yes, it does seem like a mistake in email or password could be corrected later, even if your forum requires email verification. If the user makes a mistake in both the email and the password, then there'd be no way to get to the account (other than contacting an admin, of course). So I think you could remove them. But I think confirming email and password are pretty standard and I can't imagine someone's not going to register just because of a couple confirmation fields. It seems more likely to me that someone would give up if they made a mistake in the password field and couldn't log back in.
The thing that bugs me about registration is when you leave out a required field or something, then when you submit it again you have to retype the passwords field(s) and the human verification (if it's tuned on).
