There's many other ways you can go about it though however asking yourself, how can I enforce it OR how could they bypass this? That would be my primary question if I were you, they could join the site again under a different username using a proxy and say they are female this go around to access the female only forums etc etc.

I'm using 4.2.0 and I do not see anything about profile field / or gender in adding a new usergroup.
