There is no way I know of to do that. Manually editing the database was interesting, and I don't think it will work, but did you run the counter to update forums after you made the manual edit?

After any such edit of forums you'd need to go to Admin CP -> Maintenance -> General Update Tools -> Rebuild Forum Information.

No changes would show until you ran that.
