It is a good idea to run a test site and do a test upgrade on that site prior to doing it on your live site. That way you can see if you have any big issues.

As for support, ticket support won't help with any modified code. So, if you are needing help with a modification or trying to change templates or something like that, then ticket support would be worthless to you as you would just be told to come here and ask for help.
