You're probably right about the processor usage being due to the chatbox. An easy way to check would be to disable it for a day or two to see the impact.

Is your chatbox mod up to date? Have you taken a look at its settings for optimization?

How many concurrent users do you have on the forum? Do you know the specs of your server? Your current hosting might not be able to handle your mod configuration.
