I actually do web hosting for my company. Most data centers charge alot of money to protect against DDoS attacks. Something like an extra hundred dollars per site. Proxy html firewalls are very expensive.

In terms of hosting i switched hosting companies 3 times because each company was not accountable to their mistakes. This is why I actually started my hosting company. I would say if you find a host who is reliable stick with them. Any specific questions ask me.
