That being said, not using semicolons produces other issues like tagging email addresses and sometimes tagging the wrong username if a shorter version of the same one exists.
For instance, a member called gmail will get mentioned if herpderp@gmail.com is used in a post.
Also, a member called Mel will get mentioned if someone is trying to use @Melody in a post.
These issues are impossible to overcome without using the semicolon.
If you wonder what makes the semicolon special; that character is the only one that cannot exist in a username, because vBulletin itself uses it as a separator.
