I run that same type mod at my place (not that one but one like it) and it didn't pick up on them either. I would venture it's because the thumbs are outside the actual thread data. It just nabs the first pic in the first post and displays it in the set spot. When you nab the thread to be shown in a block or widget because of how it works, it either doesn't see it or it gets ignored.
Best bet is to ask the person that made the mod if there is a way. If there is I'd try it.
