Sweet! Thanks David. I got it to work and played around with the feature. Turns out I ran into that scenario you wrote about...the parent/edited "navbar"/child inherit situation, so I may just keep each template its own separate thing. I have different color schemes for my logo (changes depending on template color) and that gets inherited so keeping the templates separate may just be my best option.
