When Syria's president Bashar al-Assad was elected president, he had a 97% vote. People expected him to be more democratic than his father but he was only moderately so. He considers Israel an enemy of Syria and constantly criticizes the U.S. for it's support of Israel. President Obama got the U.N. to freeze his accounts last month. He may be unpopular outside the U.S. but the Arab community still looks up to him greatly. I doubt the regime will get thrown out so easily.
All we can really do is hope his army tires of the bloodshed. They are only killing their own.
