It can also be done without a mod... In your forum manager for each forum there is a box:
Prefix for Forum Status Images.

For each forum you need to create 4 icon images:

PREFIXforum_old.gif
PREFIXforum_new.gif
PREFIXforum_old_lock.gif
PREFIXforums_new_lock.gif

Put the PREFIX in the setting in the forum manager and upload the 4 images to your images/statusicon directory.

Repeat for each forum.
