Usually, people will modify their own applications to integrate into the vBulletin user system, due to (1) vBulletin is the "larger" application and (2) you know how to work around your own code easier.

If you search the "programming forums", I believe you will find threads where vBulletin sessions are discussed. (Note, however, that you will only be able to see actual code as a licensed customer.)
