Is there a way that an added registration form field can be added and required, made unique, to prevent unwanted users from coming back?

I want users who register to have to enter their unique 6 character game ID into a field, making it impossible for certain unwanted users to register.

I don't like the fact that people can use Yahoo, Hotmail, or whatever free email services to get an address and register under an alias.

IP banning sometimes keeps the good people out who come from the same host as the spammers and flamers that I want to keep out.

Any suggestions?
