KeyCAPTCHA on registration ONLY cannot help against a manual registration by spam bot operator and continuation of spamming by bot.
You should have switched on the built-in in vBulletin captcha functionality for posting by users with less than 20 (I wrote previously 10) posts.

KeyCAPTCHA protects already 10,000+ websites and we monitor in real time bot activities.
We would have immediately reacted to it, have we noticed any breach by a bot.

Some of the websites protected by KeyCAPTCHA have hundred thousands visitors a day and are very attractive for spammers but we had no such incidents yet.
