Unless they hit a vb page they cannot be distinguished as a guest or non guest, at some point they will have to log in to be a known user, you can make a splash page of course or a non vb page as the point of contact, then direct them from that page to the vb home or forums to login, best to setup your site as www.yoursite.com and then setup vb at www.yoursite.com/forums, of course no cookies will be enabled at the splash page unless you force some sort of log in, also you would not want to redirect them back to the splash page as cookies would be affected at that point. without htaccess and cookies enabled in the code of the splash page. you will need to read a few article here in that section to see how to do all this stuff
