I think the reason for that is because UBB Lite was not meant for actual communities, more just for testing and getting used to the board in the case you should want to buy it (God knows why anyone would want to buy it?), I believe the same pretty much applies to the "lite" version of vBulletin.

Unless I missed something, you would just have to start over and have them re-register (as hard as that may be for you and your users).
