- The + means you are their friend, i.e. friend request from profile etc.
- The * means they are invisible, if you have that option set in their usergroup then they can login invisible to other members however you as the site admin you can always see them on the site and with a * beside their name.
- The CMS, it's more than likely your cms and/or forum permissions... especially if you have any widgets like recent threads or posts, if you have those enabled and they are private forums it can cause what I call a conflict of permissions per say. Double-check all your permissions
