I've fixed the problem with the help of my web host's support personnel. As it turns out, the permissions were set wrong - they were all set to 777. I've chmoded them to 644 and everything is working fine now. I'll agree that it was probably a novice mistake/error, but I didn't change the file permissions prior to (or after) uploading the files to the server so I don't know how they became set to 777. It may very well be a setting in my FTP program which I am unaware of (I use Cyberduck for the Mac OS X). I'll look into it.
Regardless, the problem is fixed now.
