How can I show thumbnails and small images to guests while disabling attachments?

Here's the deal:

I want guests to see images.
I don't want gusts to be downloading the huge versions of the images.

So I enable "see thumbnails" and disable "download attachments."

Now my problem is guests can't see small images that haven't had thumbnails made.

Is there an easy fix for this?
