When I do the latest update, or patch, do they include previous updates and patches?

Ref: ( Not exact versions or patches, just using these numbers for my example )

Example. If I have VB 4.0, and update to VB4.09, does this maen that update would include 4.01. 4.02. 4.03 etc? And the patches, would the latest patch also include the previous patches. Or do all updates and patches need to ne individually?
