Messages are automatically archived, however unless you enable Deep Logging (a Pro-only feature) then if you or any of your shoutbox moderators /prune the shoutbox, the shouts will vanish forever.

Currently, the only way to display the deep logging shouts is to view them via the AdminCP / ModCP, but we may look into creating a front-end display for it in the future
