How do I create an item that *does* something?

I'd like for a user to be able to buy something like a "pet walker" that when used adds points to their pet to show that it has been walked X number of steps.

I have a custom add-on for my board that allows members to have virtual pets and I'd like to be able to use your store add-on to allow them to buy merchandise and activities for their pets. Is this possible? Can I easily mod store items to *do* things other than change forum colors and such?
