Ours are set to add one point for each of: 365 days, 1000 posts, 100 rep points received. Users must have at least 50 posts to give/take points. (We get a number of newbs who like to bash people since ours is a religious board, so we make sure they're going to stick around before they can spread rep.) You can leave out any field you choose (like rep points received.) User reps can only be viewed by Staff; all the public sees are the lights.

If you reset your options, the rep power will change on anything new, but not on old reps. But you can manually edit problem members in the Admin CP. (Search for users with </> than x number of points.) You can then delete the outrageous reps.
