As a whole it's complicated, start breaking it down and playing around with some code and it all starts becoming easy.

I started with limited php knowledge, yet I am able to modify my vbulletin setup to suit my site, with a fair amount of ease, aswell as trial and error.

As borbole said, set up a test forum and take it apart, have a look inside. Best way to learn vb customisation.
