I recently stumbled upon vBulletin Cron Based Database Backup which looks like a good way to automate backups.

Haven't tried it but I've used several of Paul's other mods over the years, they're all great.

I just installed it, sweet backup, worked flawless on 4.0.6
I did recommend to him that he have the backup to
send an email also, rather then it just be sitting on the server.

very useful mod, I do not have to do manual backups anymore.
