yes it's possible

close you site
just backup your "live" database (better keep a backup on your hard disk)
change your config.php database name, username etc.. to connect to the "live" one
disable all products/mods from your Admin CP
better to set the default style as your site style too
then run your upgrade just the way you did when you upgraded the outdated database

all should be okay.
