collapsing the sidebar button has been addressed in here somewhere in pages past
sorry don't have time to go looking but the info is here in these pages I think Barbole and boofo both discussed it you may try searching their posts

also try this close the sidebar and goto home or some other page on navbar

then goto forums and see if its open again, because i think it opens by default anyways. so i dont see why you need it gone?
