Sorry, let me clarify. I don't mean that they would only need to log-in one time and they are there permanently.

My site has some pages you have to be a registered user to see. All registered users for the website are also registered for the forums. I want the two to use the same users database, so that if you log into the forums you can see the rest of the site and vice versa.

I read elsewhere that it would be easier to have the rest of my site use vBulletin's user database instead of the other way around because that would require massive change of vBulletin's code (that was the '06 post I found, so not sure how relevant it still is).
