Certainly, it says specifically in the upgrade install instructions that you need to upgrade to 3.8.4 prior to upgrading to 4.x. You can't go from 3.8.3 to vb4 ... well, you can, but its a pain in the arse to make it right afterwards..

Upgrade to 3.8.4 (or 3.8.5) and then upgrade to 4.x
