Of course it can check first post in addition to subsequent posts (replies) on the thread, but without making a relation between them such a mirroring relation or so. It can check each post on it's entity & links contained. There's also AdminCP option to set which posts do you wish to check, only first post or all posts.

Regarding the 'Extended' edition, it was the first naming for the professional version, but later we've standardized the professional edition naming to be 'Ultimate' & we've applied it currently everywhere. It's the same, just old naming convention.
