3-4 backgrounds wouldn't be too bad. But it would still be slower loading the first 3 or 4 times until all of the backgrounds are cached. I can see that potentially costing new registrations. You know what is going on and why it is going to be slower until the backgrounds are cached. However, your visitors will not know that. They will just think that your site is slow and leave without registering before all 4 backgrounds are cached. IMHO.
