there are commercial mods out there, cometchat for 50 bucks and arrowchat is in development (pre-order 65$). I currently use cometchat, but Arrowchat seems to get more features, more development and more stability. So I might switch. There's a mod called tokstachat as well, that's free, but I believe it has some ads in it and is remotely hosted. Haven't tried that one. (btw I'm not affiliated with any of these.)
