You should be able to make most image changes to gif without any major issues, but CSS changes would be more comprehensive. Consider looking around for some new skins, I'd imagine template developers would be keen to make a better cross-browser ranger now...

And I wouldn't hold your breath for them fixing IE6 issues, there's enough problems with the current designs to keep them busy a long time...
