Avatars which are over the filesize or height/width limits are sized to match the requirements, sometimes decreasing the quality of the graphic. To increase the settings - You would need to edit your avatar settings via your AdminCP per usergroup: AdminCP --> Usergroups --> Usergroup Manager --> (select usergroup) --> Picture Uploading Permissions --- And edit the following:

Custom Avatar Maximum Width (pixels)
Custom Avatar Maximum Height (pixels)
Custom Avatar Maximum File Size (bytes)
