You don't need a hack to do that, vBulletin can already do it.

In the AdminCP select Forums & Moderators -> Forum Manager. On the sub-forum you want to fix the style, make sure the Controls say Edit Forum and click Go. Under the Style Options section, change the Custom Style for this Forum and click Save.
